Epistemic interface in the discourse of new media culture

Abstract. This article focuses on the epistemic interface that may be distinguished in the new media culture discourse. The author aims to find out the possibilities of the epistemic interface as «the system of coordinates» for the new-media culture. Since this subject is analyzed in context of the new media culture discourse, it necessitates to study the media discourse as well, treating it as an epistemic process. The new media culture discourse demonstrates a distinct character marked with quite peculiar features, and might be defined as the process of generating, reproducing and communicating socially and culturally significant meanings and knowledge. The article examines the experience on conceptualization of the epistemic interface, which might be viewed in a relatively narrow historical and philosophical retrospective, and in a number of modern philosophical studies as well. The author suggests a definition of epistemic interface and decides on a relevant theoretical and methodological research foundation basing on the character of the subject. The key method here is the systems approach allowing to describe and comprehend the new media culture as a complex dynamic system. Another method is the discourse analysis allowing to distinguish the specific properties of the new media culture through the study of communicative practices that occur in it and about it. The historical and philosophical analysis method is adapted in identifying the contexts of epistemic interface conceptualization. The author concludes that communicative practices arising in the new media culture, along with the meanings and knowledge communicated through media channels, determine the formation of the epistemic interface, which, in turn, becomes a condition for the possibility and self-reproducibility of the new media culture.
